A GIS study to rank Irish agricultural lands with background and anthropogenic concentrations of metal(loid)s in soil

Heavy metal pollution may cause a serious threat to human health and is global problem. The bio-availability of metals metalloids (metal (loid)s) in the soil dominating parameter for (loid) uptake by plants, which subsequently be ingested individuals through food pathway. This study aimed develop novel approach based on semi-quantitative probability-impact (P–I) matrix with help GIS mapping tool. ArcGIS was used data analysis, classification, reclassification parameters model. Nine influencing were selected risk ranking. These are pH, organic carbon (SOC), texture class, slope, field/soil drainage Integrated Risk Quotient (IRQ), proximity mines, urban activity, potential biosolids application areas. results revealed that certain areas (including Co. Louth, Wicklow, Wexford) along East coast Ireland pose higher relative risk. Therefore, in-depth quantitative assessment proposed considering bioaccumulation (loid)s if crops grown land elevated levels (loid)s. Furthermore, this work reveals usefulness techniques rank pollutants.
